But WHY did he hit her?

Recently, a woman came in by EMS after her boyfriend beat her up. According to her friend, this had happened before, "but never this bad."

One of the nurses was very concerned for this girl. He spent quite a bit of time in the room with her trying to explain to her that she needed to get out of this situation before her boyfriend injured her very seriously, or even killed her.

About 20 minutes later, he came out of the room, sat down at the nurses' station and put his head in his hands. I walked over to find out how it had gone.

He looked up at me with tortured eyes. "I'm a horrible person," he said. I asked why, and he said, "After 20 minutes with this girl, I wanted to hit her, too! She wouldn't shut up, she just kept yapping away, he was probably just trying to get her to shut up!"

Probably true, since he hit her in the mouth.

Now, I don't think men as a rule should be hitting women. But I do think that there are exceptions to every rule. Apparently she was one of them.

I just thought of several mysogenist jokes. Though of course a joke needs a grain of truth in it to be truly funny.

I wouldn't say that people, as a rule, should be hitting anyone else -- or that anyone really deserves to be -- but the difference between your colleague and the boyfriend here was that although he might have wanted to hit the girl, he didn't.

For a lot of our customers, make or female, the only appropriate response is a good bitch-slap. Unfortunately, for reasons unknown to me, we aren't allowed to offer fist therapy in the ER.

Dope-slap therapy. More for the therapist than the therapee, but I want to be a dope-slap therapist.

Hey, I know her! Seriously. Actually, I know several of her, and they could all use a good whmph.

I don't condone hitting people. But sometimes, it's completely understandable.

The Slap Upside the Head works wonders. Nothing else should be allowed, regardless of genders, I think. Please don't encourage the wife-beating freaks.
